A lot of people think that they know very little about drug use and this can act as a barrier when encountering people who use drugs. The truth is that if you know about the nation's favourite drug, alcohol, then you're halfway there in understanding other drug use.
We all know that people use alcohol in many different ways and for many different reasons and this is also true for people using other drugs. This may relate to the frequency of use- some people use daily, some people maybe once or twice a year. We may think it perfectly acceptable to have a glass of wine after a hard day/ week at work yet look down on other people if they choose a different drug to relax. People use other drugs for the same reasons as people use alcohol-
Statistics show that roughly the same percentage of people will experience significant issues with their drug use (including addiction) as they do with alcohol use- estimated at around 20% of all users. So let's try and get away from the idea that alcohol is really that different from other drug use and start to understand the 'person' rather than only seeing that person's drug use.
